BROADCAST SURCHARGE

What is a Broadcast Surcharge and why is it being charged?

In 1992, the Federal government gave local television stations the unilateral decision to grant or deny permission for carriage of their television signal by cable and satellite providers.

This means Broadcasters currently have the option of requiring cable and satellite providers to pay to carry their stations, despite the fact that their signals are being sent over the air, using free spectrum granted to them by the Federal government.  Unfortunately, the option to charge these fees became such a lucrative revenue stream to many broadcasters that they’ve continued to take advantage of it, regardless of the cost to consumers.

Madison does absorb some of these fees, however, we have no choice but to pass some of these fees called Broadcast Surcharges on to the customer, increasing their overall monthly charges.

Madison's Pledge to our customers:

We want you to know that while this situation has resulted in the surcharge on customer bills, we do not profit from this and will not collect more from the surcharge than we pay to the owners of these broadcast TV stations. We will also continue to fight the rising costs from broadcasters through letters to Congress and other communication outlets.

As a voter, you can help change this by contacting your Congressman and local broadcasters to let your voice be heard! You can also complete the form below and Madison Communications will send a letter to your Congressman on your behalf to inform them that you would like to see broadcast carriage rules reformed.

Madison qualifies for a waiver from the FCC that relieves Madison of the requirement to ensure that on-screen text menus and guides for the display or selection of multichannel video programming provided by navigation devices that it leases are audibly accessible in real-time upon request by individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Therefore, customers who are blind or visually impaired using Madison will not be able to audibly access any of the functions in the display or selection of multichannel video programming via on-screen text menus and guides.
